How to use Barcode Scanners effectively
Previously, devices were often designed for one specific function, but nowadays they are increasingly being used in a more versatile and specialized manner for optimal results. Reverse IT Consultant Henk van Asselt shares seven valuable tips for the effective use of barcode scanners in warehouses, enabling companies to improve their processes and work more efficiently.
Tip 1: Choose a compact scanner model
In the past, most devices were large and designed for a single specific task. Nowadays, compact models are becoming more common, making them ideal for multiple tasks in a warehouse. Compact scanners are portable and easy to carry around the facility. Modern technology allows most devices to read small 2D barcodes (7×7 mm) from shorter distances and scan labels up to 1.5 meters away with ease.
Tip 2: Consider the scan distance
Older barcode scanners used laser beams that could only scan over a short or long distance, making it essential to choose the right device for specific tasks. Today, laser technology has been replaced by imagers that bridge various distances more effectively, allowing for multifunctional use. Ensure your barcode scanners are suitable for longer distances of at least 1.5 meters, especially when scanning large barcodes above dock doors.
Tip 3: Pay attention to barcode size
To help the scanner overcome long scan distances, it’s true that "size does matter." When small 2D barcodes are blown up to A4 size, many devices can read them easily from 6 to 10 meters away. However, it’s often impractical to use large barcodes on warehouse shelves, which are typically much smaller. Ensure your scanner has the proper technique and quality to read these smaller barcodes from a distance.
Tip 4: Ensure adequate contrast for codes
Many warehouses use barcode labels that they print themselves. While this can be fine, issues may arise over time with labels made using direct thermal printing, as the print fades, reducing contrast. Ensure your labels have high contrast to make them easily scannable. Avoid prints on dark backgrounds or laminated codes with glossy plastic, as these can make it difficult for scanners to read.
Tip 5: Ensure proper lighting in the warehouse
Poor lighting can disrupt barcode scanning, even with the latest equipment. While many devices can illuminate barcodes at short distances, this effect diminishes over longer distances. Proper lighting and strategic placement of labels are crucial. For example, when forklift drivers scan labels on high shelves, poor lighting and positioning can create challenges like:
- Scanning at an angle distorts the barcode image.
- Glare from overhead lights or skylights can blind the scanner.
- Reflections can make the barcode hard to read.
- If you can't distinguish the smallest barcode details by eye, the scanner will struggle too.
Tip 6: Replace damaged labels
If your equipment frequently fails to scan barcodes correctly, consider replacing all labels. This can be an effective way to eliminate scanning issues. Watch out for these problematic labels:
- Faded or worn labels.
- Create a new layout that maximizes barcode space.
- Use 2D barcodes to enlarge barcode elements.
- Place labels at eye level for higher shelves.
- Utilize colors for added contrast.
Tip 7: Invest in new scanning technologies
If you relate to the above scanning challenges, it might be time to upgrade your old mobile devices to newer models. The latest models come equipped with improved technology that can lead to better scanning results and greater efficiency for warehouse workers.
